Activity overview
In early 2025, we have successfully organized four sessions of the "Mountaincraft & Leave No Trace Training and Lantau Mountain Camp Conservation Tour." Over 60 participants explored Stage 2 of the Lantau Trail and the stone cabin cluster at Lantau Mountain Camp, engaging in hands-on learning about hiking safety, cultural conservation, and ecological protection. The activity integrated professional mountain craft training, leave-no-trace principles, and historical-cultural guided tours, pioneering a new model of interdisciplinary conservation education.
Key achievements and value
Skill development and awareness enhancement
- Participants gained comprehensive knowledge of gear selection for day hikes, hiking safety planning, and some preliminary emergency response techniques
- Through on-site observation of visitor impacts (e.g., cabin deterioration), participants deepened their understanding and application of the seven Leave No Trace principles
Promotion of cultural and natural heritage
- Guided tours of the century-old missionary stone cabins, the Caretaker’s Hut, and Sunset Peak viewpoint connected local history with conservation practices
Leave-no-trace principles
- Plan ahead and prepare
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces
- Dispose of waste properly
- Leave what you find
- Minimise campfire impacts
- Respect wildfire
- Be considerate to other visitors
